PressPermit is an advanced content permissions system, now part of the PublishPress family of professional publishing tools.

Important Note for current Pro users: Download PressPermitPro from before upgrading to this version. PressPermit Pro is now a separate plugin which replaces both Press Permit Core and all PP extension plugins. Contact us for assistance in migrating your account.

Core Features included in this plugin:

  • Permissions model extends the WordPress roles framework
  • Assign supplemental roles and exceptions for custom post types

  • Post-specific control for any user, group or WordPress role

Compatibility Notes

caching plugins : disable caching for logged users (unless you only use PressPermit to customize editing access).

Custom WP_Query calls : Often, conflicts can be resolved by specifying a post_type argument. To prevent improper filtering of front-end ajax calls, pass required_operation=read or hook into the pp_unfiltered_ajax filter and add your action to the return array.

WPML Multilingual CMS : plugin creates a separate post / page / category for each translation. The Compatibility Pack module (included in PressPermit Pro) is required to filter the PressPermit Exceptions item selection UI by language and (optionally) to enable mirroring of exceptions to translations.

  • Edit Page screen: enable or block groups

Perguntas frequentes

How does PressPermit compare to Capability Manager Enhanced, User Role Editor and other role editor plugins?

PressPermit’s functionality is different from and complementary to a basic role editor / user management plugin. In terms of permissions, those plugins’ primary function is to alter WordPress’ definition of the capabilities included in each role. In other words, they expose lots of knobs for the permissions control which WordPress innately supports. That’s a valuable task, and in many cases will be all the role customization you need. Since WP role definitions are stored in the main WordPress database, they remain even said plugin is deactivated. Capability Manager Enhanced is a WordPress role editor designed for integration with PressPermit.

PressPermit can assist you in turning the site-wide capability knobs for desired post types. But it also supercharges your permissions engine. PressPermit it is particularly useful when you want to customize access to a specific post, category or term. Extension plugins add collaborative editing control, file filtering and other features which are not otherwise possible. The plugin will work with your WP roles as a starting point, whether customized by a role editor or not. Users of the PP Collaborative Editing extension can (after activating advanced settings) navigate to Permissions > Settings > Role Usage to see (or modify) how PressPermit is using your WP role definitions. PressPermit’s modifications remain only while it stays active.

What extra access control would PressPermit Pro give me?

For a detailed comparison, see the Role Scoper / PressPermit Feature Grid. Here are some highlights:

Customize editing permissions for specific posts.

Control which categories or terms users can post to.

Define custom post statuses for access-controlled multi-step moderation.

PublishPress integration.

Prevent inappropriate “back door” access by direct file url.

What about Role Scoper?

Moving forward, we do not plan any major development of the Role Scoper code base. If you encounter issues with Role Scoper and need to migrate to a different solution, PressPermit Pro provides access to an import script which can (for most installations) automate the majority of your Role Scoper migration.

For a detailed feature comparison, see the RS/PP Feature Grid.

Can I import settings from Role Scoper?

Yes. PressPermit Pro can import the most Role Scoper groups, roles, restrictions and options. Some manual followup may be required for some configurations.

Is PressPermit an out-of-the-box membership solution?

No, but it can potentially be used in conjunction with an e-commerce or membership plugin. If you have a way to sell users into a WordPress role or BuddyPress group, PressPermit can grant access based on that membership.

Where does PressPermit store its settings? How can I completely remove it from my database?

PressPermit creates and uses the following tables: pp_groups, pp_group_members, ppc_roles, ppc_exceptions, ppc_exception_items. PressPermit options stored to the WordPress options table have an option name prefixed with “pp_”. Due to the potential damage incurred by accidental deletion, no automatic removal is currently available. You can use a SQL editing tool such as phpMyAdmin to drop the tables and delete the pp options.

The other plugins cannot block individual pages or posts for certain groups. This plugin can do it! It is exactly the missing plugin that WordPress needs compared to Typo3 or other CMS with much better rights management. It is exactly what I was looking for. Many thanks to the developers! In my opinion you need more attention. @Developer I don't use credit cards on principle. Can you add PayPal to your payment options? Then I would also order the Pro version for multiple pages. Thx.

I build a system in which clients accessed certain parts of a blog-like diary, seeing only content assigned to them. Worked perfectly (after figuring out how everything worked 😀 took a day...) Highly recommend this.

The interface is slightly confusing at firstm but this is the only plugin that I know of where you can customize the individual posts that users can modify.

After the latest upgrade, I am now no longer be able to add exception to anything (post, page, users, events, etc). So basically PressPermit is not usable at the moment. I've contacted support but the issue was just marked as resolved without asking me for feedback at all. It's still not working and we'll be forced to look for alternative if there's no help from "Support".

I have spent over 10 hours trying to figure out a solution to hide posts with a specific tag, and also without another specific tag, from specific user roles. I couldn't find anything with the exact conditions I need. This hides things from archive pages, from direct URL access, and even from the Divi blog module. Huge downfall: not hiding from search results. I have to use my own plugin to display different search results dependent on user role. A less important note...In the circumstance that the user uses a direct URL, it would be nice to be able to have a "please sign in to access this" page (instead of 404) then redirect them back to the page they were trying to access.
